Question: What do you think…should I bother to print out his book and hand out to my good friends in the Elder’s Quorum?

Last Sunday in priesthood there was a discussion regarding the growth of our Church? With the greatest respect, most of what was said was pure myth. It is commonly purported among LDS that "the growth in the LDS Church is phenomenal…that it is the fastest growing Church…or…according to reports by 2080 membership will be 265 million!…"

All these common sentiments just are not true. Those who make such claims mean no harm, and of course, love the Church and are excited about its growth naturally.

The reality, however, is that Church growth has significantly slowed from 5% to 3%. What is more, other Churches vastly out grew the LDS Church by significant, if not breathtaking, numbers.

However, I did not have the heart to dispel the illusion held by all members of my LDS Elders Quorum. No one likes to be corrected, especially in front of others, more especially if the illusion is something commonly held in belief by many others, even more especially if somehow the illusion is tied to faith, love, loyalty and a type of sign which buttresses their faith in the Church they so love and know beyond doubt to be true. Sometimes it’s just better to keep things to ones self until a better opportunity presents itself.

He is an exceedingly faithful LDS who loves missionary work, statistics, and facts; he is not afraid of facts & stats & reality when it comes to Church growth. His work is extremely insightful and very valuable to the LDS community.

I’m thinking of printing out his book and distributing it. Facts are our friends and ought not to offend us!

Nidal Malik Hasan the Forth Hood shooter shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ before deadly attack. Hasan spent 6 years as a psychiatrist before coming to Fort Hood Texas for deployment.

The gunman behind the carnage at a Texas military base hollered “Allahu Akbar!” before unleashing a bloody rampage that left more than a dozen dead, an onlooker told investigators.

According to Dictionary.com, boring is defined as follows: To make weary by being dull, repetitive, or tedious.  Given this definition, I think the Spurs are somewhat boring.  Consider the following:

• For the past five seasons this team has won between 56 and 63 regular season games.
• The team’s Wins Produced for the past five seasons has ranged from 53.5 to 63.1.
• In each season the team has been led in Wins Produced by the exact same trio (this is the really repetitive or boring aspect of this team). The trio consists of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker, and the Wins Production of these three players has ranged from 35.5 to 44.4.
• Prior to last season, the Wins Produced of every Spur not named Duncan, Ginobili, and Parker ranged from 18.7 to 24.3.

In sum, the Spurs are quite repetitive.  And for someone who is not particularly a fan of this team, such repetition seems kind of boring.

The Story this Season

It’s my goal to offer one comment on every NBA team before the midpoint of the season.  So despite the repetitive nature of this team, I feel compelled to say something about San Antonio. 

Let me start by noting that last season the Wins Produced of everyone not named Duncan, Ginobili, and Parker dipped to 12.3.  Consequently, the team’s performance declined a bit.

This season – as Table One indicates – the Spurs are again led by Duncan, Ginobili, and Parker.  And the productivity of everyone else is projected to by 19.3 by the time the season ends (yes, same old story).

Unfortunately, now the top three have dropped off a bit.  Last season Duncan, Ginobili, and Parker produced 41.2 wins.  This season this trio is only on pace to produce 31.8 victories.

Part of this decline is associated with a drop-off in minutes played.  If these three players played the same number of minutes as last season, the trio would be on pace to produce 36.0 wins (given their per-minute productivity this season).  In sum, the change in minutes explains about one-half of the decline in the total production of these players.

For the other half we have to look at WP48 [Wins Produced per 48 minutes].  Although Parker is having one of the best seasons of his career, Duncan and Ginobili are offering substantially less.  In fact, both players haven’t played this poorly since each player’s sophomore season in the NBA.

The decline in the productivity of Duncan and Ginobili is the primary reason (the loss of Brent Barry isn’t helping either) why this team is posting its smallest efficiency differential (offensive efficiency minus defensive efficiency) since 1996-97 (the year before Duncan arrived).  Currently this team’s differential is 3.94.  Prior to this season, the lowest mark for the Spurs in the Duncan era has been 4.36 (that was Duncan’s rookie season).

As the season progresses it’s possible that both Duncan and Ginobili will return to form.  If this happens, San Antonio’s differential will increase.  This might be good enough for the Spurs to solidify its ranking as the second best team in the Western Conference.  But it’s not likely this team can close the gap with the Lakers in the West.   So it seems unlikely that the Spurs will win another title in 2009. 

And this is pretty much the same thing I said last August.  The Spurs will be led in Wins Produced by Duncan, Ginobili, and Parker.  Because of these three players, the Spurs will be very good.  But because the Lakers have improved so much, the Spurs trio will probably not be good enough.  In sum, I am being repetitive (at least when I talk about the repetitive Spurs).

Last Teams

At this point these are the only teams I have not yet discussed this season: Atlanta, Dallas, Sacramento, Washington, Indiana, and New Orleans.  Look for something on each team in the next ten days.  And then we will be at the mid-point of the season and I will review the entire league.  This review will discuss both the top teams and players across the first half of the 2008-09 season.

And when that’s done, then I will start all over with posts on each team in the NBA in the second-half (yes this all seems quite repetitive).

Session: What Will Travel Websites Look Like in The Future?

Q: Last time we met was when you spoke at ET Summit in NYC in 2005 when you were running USDM.net working for your aunt Leah Woolford.  You’re now on your own, why did you leave and what have you done since?

A: I left USDM in late 2006.  As far as why, why does anyone choose to follow their own path? Sometimes it’s just in us to make a change and invest in ourselves.  I actually didn’t start my company directly after I left.  I took some much needed time off and investigated what it was about Interactive and Tourism that made it my siren song.  In July of 2007, I had been getting so many consulting requests  from DMOs, that I realized if I didn’t get back the industry was going to drag me back… So, here I am. 

 We have consulted and created strategy at many levels of interactive needs.  For instance, we run the boutique agency for clients like Panama City Beach, Baton Rouge, Loudoun County, VA,  Bradenton Area CVB.  And, we also have executed custom consulting jobs like in Minneapolis, where we were asked to redesign their in-house agency to fit the growing trends of an open brand vs. a traditional strategy.  And, we partner with unlikely companies, educating both our competition (coop-etition) and DMOs on our particular open source approach to marketing online.  We have an education arm to our firm, JB University – which is our labor of love to provide any and all education, completely transparent to the Travel Industry.   

Q: What will your presentation be focusing on at E-Tourism Summit?  

A: The future of Web Design and Websites.  We (the travel industry) are still building these proprietary monster sites, and it’s the beginning of the end for that.  This is the age of Open Source and content distribution.  In the coming 3 years we will separate the men from the boys so to speak in the interactive realm.  The best client is a knowledgeable one, one that aids in attacking problems with you. With billions of sites on the web, and millions of those focused to users in this industry, our main marketing tool should always be the forefront of discussion and making that tool stand apart in some way from the rest.  My presentation is going to dig in to the factors that make tomorrow’s web site … I think the attendees will be surprised to hear the real trends.  I’ll save those trade secrets for the show:)

A: My Blog, Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, Linked In, Digg and about 10 more that we use depending on the topics.

We post daily to the blog, several times a day to FB and Twitter, and the others are worked in based on topics.  For us, social media is more than just  our own networking – it’s about getting dirty and rolling our sleeves up, to both leverage practical applications and foresee important trends for clients.  We have over 6,700 Twitter followers and  I take our social networking very seriously.  I just recently wrote a blog post http://dotcomconfessions.com/twitter/twitter-orphans about my soapbox of creating social sites then abandoning them. How often do we post?  Several times a day…with a vengeance.

Q: How do you balance everything you do with a family life?  

A: I have a lovely family that drives me to excel and balance this crazy life.  My husband, Drew worked for EDS, where he managed infrastructure for the Navy’s bases in the Western Hemisphere.  Last year, we decided that we wanted to grow this company together, and he is now with JB Inc.  So, I get to see him 24 hours.  My two girls are also in the mix, Dakota is 9 and going on 15 like most girls her age.  Andrea is 7 and a live wire!  Both of the girls travel with us on client trips.  This year, we spent two weeks in New York, a week in Phoenix and it worked out great.  Blackberrys are a beautiful thing, and allow me flexibility in my work/play.  Balance for us is about integration, and having fun in everything we do.  Life is life…on the job or off.
